And now for a little bit of history
as mom remembers it:
Keera’s interest in racing began when
she was about 8 years old and would spend Sunday afternoons
sitting on the sofa with her Grandpa watching NASCAR. We
all thought it was cute when she went around saying “I want
to be a race car driver when I grow up!” Well one thing
led to another and we ended up buying her a very used Quarter
Midget car for her 10th birthday. Needless to say, she was
thrilled to death and springtime(2003) couldn’t come fast
enough for her.
It
was obvious early on that she had some talent behind the
wheel. She won many races and set her first track record
in her rookie year and was voted Rookie of the Year by her
peers. Halfway through the year, her dad realized that she
could outdrive what that used car could do, so he bought
her her very first Bullrider and we moved her out of the
novice class into Senior Honda. 3 Races later, she made
her first A-main in a competitive class in the very last
race of the year. It was nice to end her first year racing
on such a high note.
2004 - Early on in the season, she surprised
us all by setting another track record. Her dad bought her
yet another car and was loaned a Deco Stock Engine for her
to run in it. So we became a two car team and it was in
that second car that she won her first championship.
2005- This was an exciting year for Keera.
Ray McCallum from McLaren Performance Technologies joined
our team and with his help setting up and crewing her cars
we were on our way to a banner year. She also experienced
her first on track rivalry with a young man by the name
of Trevor Berry. It was a very friendly rivalry and both
drivers had an extreme amount of respect for each other.
It was fun to watch the two of them go at it on the track.
You just never knew who was going to win until the last
lap. By the end of the year she earned herself another championship
and was voted Female Driver of the year in 2 different points
series. She also ran the Ft Wayne Rumble Series for the
first time and won 2 of the 4 features she ran in.
2006
– We had an offer from Sterling Performance to buy her a
‘B’ Engine. So yet another car got added to the team. My
husband found himself having to work on quite a few of the
race weekends but luckily with the help of a lot of good
friends we still managed to make most of the races. Even
with the couple races we were forced to miss, Keera still
finished pretty strong in the points series. The year finished
off with the Fort Wayne Rumble where she had a good showing.
All in all, Keera absolutely has a passion
for racing. Just put her in something fast and she’s happy.
I tease her all the time calling her ‘My Little Adrenaline
Junkie’ She gives up a lot to pursue this passion. When
her friends from school are making plans to go to dances
or the movies, she is packing the trailer getting ready
for another weekend on the road. She has also gained a lot
from her experiences too. She has made friends from all
over the USA who she keeps in touch with by phone and internet
and as a family it has all drawn us closer together.
